llustration for Rotary magazine for Andrii Kurkov's essay in which he reflects on the essence of freedom, recalling his childhood and youth against the background of what was happening in Soviet time in Ukraine
I was very touched by how he aptly wrote about the phenomenon of the "Soviet human", which the Soviet Union had been trying to cultivate for many years, and I am still horrified by what this system did to people.
During Soviet times, there was a lot of propaganda in everything, and especially in art. Historically, porcelain sculptures were associated with something refined, aristocratic, but in the Soviet Union, these stamped porcelain sculptures represented the working class, thereby reversing the original idea of this art form. The same thing happened to human lives there, because human life is fragile like porcelain, but it broke and everyone was cast from the same matrix. Our roots, our identity, have been carved out.
But as it turned out, it was not possible to completely cut it. Thanks to the generation of our grandparents, we have these roots, which were hidden in chests and chests far from the eyes of Moscow.
